Brand Discussions with Brandon: Why Smart Brands Start Testing Earlier

Having a customer join us on the Ara & Friends podcast is always something special.

As an ISO 17025 accredited lab, customer confidentiality is something we take seriously. So, when a brand is willing to pull back the curtain and share their experience, we think that’s worth paying attention to.

Ara and Friends Podcast

Brandon Dantoni, International Nutrition director of operations and quality did exactly that. And the conversation was packed with real, practical insight for anyone navigating supplement manufacturing and GMP compliance.

Start Testing in R&D - Not at the Finish Line

One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation with Brandon is something we talk about often at Ara Testing Labs: your testing strategy should start during R&D, not at the end of production. We’ve broken this down in more detail in previous discussions around early-stage testing  and method alignment.

By the time a product reaches QC release, your test methods should already be decided, your specifications should already be set, and your lab should already understand how to test your product.

When that work gets pushed to the finish line, you introduce risk at exactly the wrong time. And in many cases, that risk shows up as delays.

Smart brands avoid that by starting the conversation earlier.

Complex Formulas Come With Complex Challenges

As formulations become more advanced, the margin for error gets smaller.

Brandon made this clear when he talked about matrix interference in complex blends. The more ingredients you’re working with, the more opportunity there is for those ingredients to interact, not just with each other, but with the testing methods themselves.

Enzymes are a great example. Their natural synergies can directly impact test results because many analytical methods were originally designed for raw material testing rather than finished product matrices.

That’s why alignment matters.

You need to know what you’re testing for, make sure your measurement approach matches how results are reported, and confirm that your specifications align with the method that is being run.

Those are straightforward conversations… but they’re much easier to have before testing ever begins.

A Partnership That Saves Time and Money

At Ara Testing Labs, we never want to be a lab that tests blind.

When brands involve us early, during R&D, before samples are shipped, and while formulation decisions are still being made—we’re able to step in as an extension of their quality team.

That means we can align methods, understand your specifications, and build a testing program that works reliably from the start.

And when that happens, the outcomes are consistent:

    • Faster turnaround
    • Fewer surprises
    • Greater confidence in results

That’s the kind of partnership Brandon described. And it’s exactly what we aim to provide every day.

Start the Conversation Before it Becomes Urgent

Whether you’re building a new product, working through formulation complexity, or looking to strengthen your existing testing strategy, there’s real value in starting earlier than you think you need to.

Because the brands that stay on track aren’t always doing more at the end.

They’re simply making the right decisions at the beginning.
